POS Scanner

Instead of a keyboard, a POS Barcode Scanner may be used to capture item data.  These scanners are commonly used in supermarkets and retail shops where there is need to process and complete sales transactions for a queue line of customers as fast as possible.

Barcode scanners read the UPC bar codes found on most items sold these day.

Barcode scanners come in models referred to as straight line or omni directional.

Omni directional scanners can read from different angles.  These are suitable for bar codes printed on non-flat surfaces, e.g. a tin can of soup.  Omni directional scanners tend to be bulkier.

Handheld straight line scanners tend to be smaller and are portable.

POS scanners support USB, serial port (RS232) or keyboard wedge (PS2 Y connector) connections.  Check for suitable interface with the POS Terminal and POS software.

Prices of these scanners go up as their speed, resolution and reliability increases.
