Many physical retail stores have started to use the internet as additional sales avenue, opening e-commerce websites.  These e-commerce stores open 24hrs daily, allowing customers to shop anytime at their convenience.

To collect payments online, the websites will need to integrate with payment gateways that enables credit card payment acceptance used by most e-commerce websites.  These payment gateways protect the customer’s credit card information by encrypting sensitive information like customers credit card number etc. so that it is passed securely between the customer and the merchant and also between merchant and the payment processor.

There are various payment service providers (PSP) that provide this payment gateway service.  Some examples are PayPal, WorldPay, Verifone etc.

The payment service provider will typically charge a fee that is a percentage of each transaction or a fixed cost per transaction.
