There are POS System software that are cheap, some even offered free.  Do check carefully the functionalities offered by these free versions.

Some free versions only provide the basic cash register function.  Additional features, such as inventory management, custom reporting etc., may be purchased with add-on payments.  Technical support also incur additional charges.
